Contabo VPS hosting review and buying guide

Official-source review · Independent benchmark pending

Contabo's VPS offer is best evaluated by its current product family, resource allocation and operational rules. Older reviews can describe a different server generation. This review uses the current official portfolio and separates package specifications from unmeasured performance, with particular attention to network policy, upgrades and region changes.

Contabo Cloud VPS

Current Core portfolio

Cloud VPS 4, 6 and 8 specifications are documented below. A reliable current regional price was not confirmed, so the order total must be checked in the live configurator.

Do not attach an older Cloud VPS 10/20/30 price to the current Core specifications.

Expert verdict

Worth shortlisting when memory and storage requirements are clear and you can operate the server yourself. Less suitable for a buyer relying on an old plan name or assuming many virtual cores guarantee sustained application speed. Verify the exact generation and test a representative workload before migrating anything business-critical.

Ideal Match

Best for

Administrators choosing a fixed VPS package around known resource needs. Development and staging workloads with a tested recovery process. Buyers willing to examine CPU, storage and network limits separately.

Advisory

Who should avoid it

  • You require the provider to maintain your application by default.
  • You expect unmetered traffic to guarantee unlimited sustained throughput.
  • You need a specific processor model without confirming allocation.

How this profile was reviewed

Official-source desk review checked September 7, 2026. Prices retain their published currency and term; unconfirmed live quotes are labeled explicitly. Recommendations and workload checklists are editorial analysis, not hands-on test results. A measured comparison would require equivalent applications, regions, caching settings and load, repeated runs, raw results and a disclosed test date.

Plans and pricing

Current Core specifications from Contabo's official portfolio, checked September 7, 2026. The published Core storage is SSD; do not silently relabel it NVMe. Prices are left as live quotes because a matching current regional offer was not verified. Port speeds are specifications, not measured transfer results.

Cloud VPS 4: A resource-led evaluation server. Confirm currency, region, term and any setup or location charge. Official configuration

Cloud VPS 6: A workload requiring more memory or storage. Do not reuse prices for older product generations. Official configuration

Cloud VPS 8: Testing a larger memory footprint. The configuration is documented; checkout pricing remains unconfirmed. Official configuration

Pros

  • Administrators choosing a fixed VPS package around known resource needs.
  • Development and staging workloads with a tested recovery process.
  • Buyers willing to examine CPU, storage and network limits separately.

Watch-outs

  • Old plan names and prices may describe a different generation.
  • Core SSD and Performance NVMe specifications are not interchangeable.
  • A new setup can delete data; a region move changes addresses.
  • Fair usage limits the meaning of unmetered traffic.

Contabo VPS plans: compare the right generation

Contabo's current documentation separates Core, Performance and Max Performance products. The Core processor is assigned according to provisioning availability, and the package dimensions are fixed rather than individually configurable. Compare the actual purchased generation before drawing conclusions from a review of an older server.

Our buying recommendation is to ask for a saved quote that identifies the exact family, storage type, region and recurring total. If you need more CPU throughput rather than more memory, simply choosing the next memory tier may not solve the problem. Diagnose the limiting resource and compare a different family where appropriate.

Contabo bandwidth policy and practical throughput

The current traffic guide describes fair usage rather than a fixed default transfer allowance. It reserves the possibility of throttling unusually high or disruptive use. That is different from a promise of unrestricted sustained transfer at the advertised port speed, and it should be considered before running a download-heavy service.

Evaluate both the amount of data moved and the rate needed during your busiest period. A daily backup job and a media-download service can consume similar total data while stressing the network very differently. Ask about the intended workload before ordering, and measure from the destinations that matter to your customers.

Contabo upgrades and region moves: protect data first

Contabo distinguishes new deployment from migration when changing a server. Its upgrade guide warns about destructive setup paths, and its region-change guide distinguishes a paid live migration from a new setup that deletes existing data. Region changes also replace IP addresses, so applications with IP allowlists and DNS records need attention.

Before any move, maintain a backup that is not stored only on the source server or a location-bound backup add-on. Rehearse restoring the database and files, record DNS and firewall settings, and plan a maintenance window. We would not describe a migration as risk-free simply because it can be requested from a control panel.

Independent benchmark pending. This Contabo review distinguishes published product information from HostingPerk's buying advice. CPU counts, storage labels and service promises are not measured website speed, reliability or visitor capacity. No account-based performance score is presented.

Products and management options

Core VPS

Standardized resource packages for self-managed workloads.

Best for: Resource-led buying

Performance and Max Performance

Separate families to evaluate when the current package does not fit the workload. Do not mix their specifications or prices with Core.

Best for: An observed performance or allocation requirement

Contabo location and service availability

The relevant region list is the one available for your actual server. Confirm any location surcharge and migration conditions before selecting a location merely because it appears cheaper.

Audience proximity
Compare the available location against the countries where users and dependent services connect.
Moving later
A different region changes addresses and can affect location-bound add-ons. Plan configuration and recovery work.

Contabo alternatives: compare the service, not just the headline price

The useful comparison is resource package versus configurable infrastructure versus a managed application service. It is not a fastest-host leaderboard. Price all required operations and backups before comparing a self-managed server with a managed website platform.

Before you buy

  1. Save the Contabo checkout quote with the exact product family, currency, billing term and tax treatment.
  2. Compare the amount payable now with the next renewal invoice, including domains, licenses and optional services.
  3. Confirm the location, migration steps and backup retention for the selected plan, not a different product on the same website.
  4. Assign an owner for application updates, payment integrations and incident recovery before moving production traffic.
  5. Test a representative site and a restore procedure. Keep the existing host until the new deployment and DNS changes are verified.
