Editorial Buying Guidance
Use this guide to build a shortlist, then verify the exact plan, term, renewal terms, and refund policy in the live checkout before you buy.
Practical budget ranges
The same word, “website,” describes a one-page portfolio and a multi-role application. A realistic first-year budget begins with scope:
| Project | Typical cost structure | Main cost driver |
|---|---|---|
| DIY brochure site | Domain plus builder or hosting plan | Billing term, renewal, and your editing time |
| Small-business lead site | Platform, content, photography, setup, measurement | Proof, service pages, forms, and local search work |
| Small store | Commerce plan, payment fees, catalog work, operations | Product data, tax, shipping, returns, and integrations |
| Custom web application | Design, engineering or AI credits, backend, QA, operations | Roles, data, integrations, security, and ongoing usage |
Headline plan prices are only one line in the budget.
Domain and identity
Budget for registration, renewal, privacy where available, email, and any premium domain purchase. Keep the registrar account under the business's control. A first-year free domain is valuable, but it does not make renewals, email, or future transfers free.
Builder and hosting
A managed builder combines editing, hosting, SSL, and deployment. Self-hosted WordPress separates software from hosting and optional plugins. A generated-code platform such as [Lovable](/providers/lovable) can use credits across building, hosting, backend, and AI services. Compare the complete operating model rather than the first advertised number.
For hosting-only detail, see the existing [web hosting cost guide](/blog/web-hosting-cost-2026). This page covers the broader production budget.
Content and media
Content often costs more than the platform because someone must interview the business, define page intent, verify claims, write and edit copy, source or create images, obtain permissions, and load everything into the system. AI can accelerate a draft but cannot supply truthful experience, customer evidence, or licensed project photography.
Design and implementation
DIY reduces cash cost and increases owner time. A freelancer or agency can improve discovery, information architecture, brand execution, accessibility, integrations, and QA. Ask proposals to separate strategy, copy, design, build, migration, analytics, SEO foundations, training, maintenance, and third-party fees.
Ecommerce and applications
Stores add payment processing, transaction fees, catalog data, shipping, tax, inventory, email, returns, fraud, and customer support. Applications add database, authentication, storage, server functions, model usage, monitoring, backups, and security review. A free prototype does not establish the cost of a reliable production system.
Maintenance and renewal
Model at least 24 months. Include platform renewal, domain, email, apps, plugins, cloud usage, content updates, backups, monitoring, and emergency support. The least expensive launch is not the best value if the owner cannot update or recover the site.
A useful budgeting formula
Total ownership cost = setup cash + owner time + first-term platform cost + renewals + required add-ons + production usage + maintenance + migration risk.
Create low, expected, and high scenarios. The high case should cover extra content, a plan upgrade, one integration, and recovery work. That range is more honest than a single universal price.
